CHILDREN from a Workington infants’ school have enjoyed much fun last week as they celebrated the coronation of King Charles III.
Ashfield Infants School in the town saw a fantastic week of celebrations bringing young and old together to enjoy a variety of activities, including coronation crafts, all children learning the national anthem, a coronation picnic and a grandparents afternoon tea which saw 400 people descend on the school.
The 'Grandparents' Afternoon Tea' held on Thursday, May 4 saw the children singing coronation songs for the grandparents as well as scones and jam donated to the school by Tesco, Workington.
Children also made coronation crowns with their families similar to those that King Charles will wear on Coronation Day to celebrate the special occasion.
Newly appointed Headteacher at Ashfield Infants School, Amy Barclay said: "It's been amazing for the children, we had some vandalism last week and it really upset them, so being able to have a celebration has been really amazing for them, we have had parents in, grandparents in and got everybody involved from the community and their faces have just lit up.
"We see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity, but the children probably will get the opportunity again, this is a national thing and we need to have that national pride.
"There were lots of tears from the grandparents, they were very appreciative of being involved, they enjoyed coming and listening to the children sing and it was just lovely to see a playground chock-a-block with nearly 400 people.
"When we sang the national anthem, the grandparents stood and joined in with it as well, so it was really lovely to watch."
The Friday celebrations saw children having a coronation picnic, with many dressing up as kings and queens to celebrate the new King officially coming to the throne.
The week has been appreciated by all the children at Ashfield who have enjoyed learning about their British values.
One year one pupil at the school said: "When the grandparents were here, I was so excited, we have been learning about the national anthem and another song called Long Live the King.
"We have had a disco this morning, and we are having a picnic not normal lunch today."
"When King Charles is at the coronation tomorrow, I think he is going to feel really happy, I think he is going to be a nice King and I am really excited."
