Average petrol prices in the UK have risen for the second consecutive month, hitting their highest level since February this year, according to the RAC.

The organisation's Fuel Watch, which monitors petrol and diesel price changes, reported that a litre of unleaded petrol was priced at 145p at the beginning of August, up 2p from June.

Diesel prices remained unchanged at 146p per litre, marking the first time in eight months that the price did not fall.

Separate government data released weekly showed that on August 13, petrol prices averaged at 149.1p per litre, a 4p increase in just two weeks.

On the same day, diesel prices stood at an average of 150.6p per litre, the highest since the end of May.

The rise in petrol prices can be attributed to an increase in wholesale costs, which in turn is due to the rising price of oil.

In July, the price of a barrel of oil rose by $10, adding 7p to the wholesale price of unleaded petrol and 9.5p to diesel. This increase in oil prices is the result of supply cuts from Russia and Saudi Arabia, two of the world's biggest producers.

As a result, consumers are feeling the impact at the pump as higher wholesale prices are passed on to them.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: "July marks a turning point in the year for fuel prices as diesel stopped falling while petrol recorded its second consecutive monthly increase.

"But more concerning is the fact that oil has gone back up to $85 a barrel, causing wholesale prices to rise significantly.

"While we’re fortunately not in the kind of upward price spiral we experienced last year, it feels like the better times at the pump are over for the time being.

"If oil producers continue to curb production then bigger forecourt price rises could be on the cards."

“This has led to a squeeze on retailer margins which were too large, so we’re currently seeing a return to them making an amount per litre more similar to their longer-term averages.
