A MOTORIST has been handed an interim driving ban until he is sentenced next month for drug-driving and animal cruelty.

Jack Greggain, 28, admitted driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit when he appeared before Workington Magistrates’ Court.

He is currently awaiting sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to a dog in Workington on March 23.

Outlining the drug-driving matter, prosecutor Pamela Fee said Greggain was stopped by police while driving a Citroen vehicle on Goodman Street in Workington on March 26.

She said officers could smell cannabis. Greggain was asked to carry out a drugs test and this gave a positive indication for cocaine and cannabis.

A blood sample was taken at the police station which showed Benzoylecgonine – the body breakdown product for cocaine – at a level of 331mcg per litre of blood. The specified limit is 50mcg. Cocaine and Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol were also present but were below the limit.

Ms Fee said the defendant was due in court on October 2 to be sentenced for the animal cruelty offence. The drug-driving matter was adjourned to tie up with the other case.

In the meantime, Greggain, of Bolton Street, Workington, was given an interim driving disqualification. He will be sentenced for both offences on October 2.
