Armed police and a helicopter have been out in Seaton this morning.
Officers have been seen around Low Seaton, Jackson Street, Kelsick Park and Derwent Avenue.
It is understood they were looking for a man wearing a white T-shirt and no trousers.
A spokeswoman for Cumbria police said: "In the early hours of December 31, police officers executed a search warrant at a house in Low Seaton, Workington.
"Armed police were deployed as a precaution. Officers have now concluded their enquiries at the premises."
She added that there was no perceived threat to the public and nobody had been arrested.
The spokeswoman said she could not confirm why officers have been searching the streets or why the helicopter was out.
Shane Ball, of Derwent Avenue, said: "It's very unusual for Seaton, we've got a very low crime rate and if there is any crime it's normally petty.
"I'm actually concerned because of how they came out in force but also intrigued at the same time."
Joe Sandwith, of Low Seaton, said: "The police were keeping it close to their chests to be honest, looking for someone just up the road.
"I was just in my garage at about 9.30am when they approached me and asked if they could have a look in the buildings in the slate yard opposite where I live.
"It's not often we have guys walking about with submachine guns and a helicopter hovering overhead in Seaton.
"It's quite concerning but I suppose it's a sign of the times really.
"You certainly don't need to see one of those guys standing on your doorstep dressed in full gear on New Year's Eve morning."
