The A66 dual carriageway at Bassenthwaite Lake is set to partially reopen by the end of the month.
The westbound side of the road has been closed since storms caused landslips in December.
A contraflow has remained in place on the eastbound side.
Highways England, which maintains the road, plans to install temporary safety barriers to reopen one lane of the westbound carriageway by the end of April.
Temporary lane closures will then be needed eastbound until the end of May while work continues to assess damage to the road and plan repairs.
A spokesman said they would be timed to minimise inconvenience to drivers.
Andy Withington, service delivery manager, said: "We know there’s been a lot of public interest in the closure and while the temporary contraflow arrangement has been working well, we’d like to reassure people that fully reopening the westbound carriageway is a priority."
