MARYPORT'S lighthouse is to be restored thanks to a £50,000 government grant.
The octagonal cylindrical lighthouse built in 1846 stands on the bend of the dock wall on the south pier.
The 36ft structure is thought to be one of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world.
It is one of 15 projects along the Great British coast to benefit from a share of £700,000 of government funding aimed at regenerating seaside towns.
The money has been given to the Maryport Coastal Communities team, led by Love Maryport.
The lighthouse will be brought back into working order and used to put the spotlight on Maryport as a tourist destination.
For generations it has captivated locals and visitors alike and featured in a number of paintings by LS Lowry.
Heritage leaflets will be developed and distributed out to the wider Cumbrian tourism hotspots to encourage visitors to visit Maryport.
