I knew Mary from when we moved to Deanscales in 1955; and she remained a friend to my parents; Raymond G Collins and Mollie Collins for the rest of their lives. Sunday afternoons were usually spent traipsing the fields and footpaths with Mary, ending up at our house "Fox Howe" in Pardshaw Hall for cups of tea. They were wonderful times of friendship. Mary introduced me, as an 11 year old to my Pen Friend in France; leaving me with a lifelong love of France and of French; something I continue to this day as I live in a bi-lingual part of Canada. My other memories of Mary; her care for her mother and her Aunts in their old age, her fun; She and I once went Trail Riding up Fangs Brow!,
her enthusiasm for teaching French from bringing Assistants over to work in local schools, to programs to teach French in Primary Schools, and visiting France every summer to play Tennis with her friends. Mary was constantly on the go! Dinner parties, gardening, and driving her car, plus all those things already mentioned. Mary will be missed by my chilcren who were lucky to have known her despite having seen her only rarely in the last few years. I guess one memorial to her is that my Grand Daughter is thriving in French Immersion School now! Mary would be happy at that. Go forth Mary, remain true to your values; for you were never shy at being yoursself. Love, Margaret Collins-Powell
