Toilets in an Aspatria park may be given a stay of execution.
Aspatria Town Council, in an attempt to keep free parking and toilets in the town, had agreed to an asset transfer from Allerdale council of the Queen Street and Brandraw car parks and toilets.
Because the St Mungo’s Park toilets are only open for six months of the year and because usage is ow, the town council had agreed that Allerdale council could demolish those toilets.
However, the move sparked criticism from campaigners in the town who launched a petition to keep them open.
Aspatria Bowling Club president, Jeff Creighton, is one of those leading the campaign despite the fact that the club has its own toilets.
He said although the toilets are only open from Easter until the beginning of October, so many sports teams who use the park will have nowhere to go.
Allerdale says the toilets cost £8,500 a year to run, and are used by four people per day, based on water costs.
In comparison, the toilets at Queen Street and Brandraw both cost £8,900 a year but are used by 18 and 11 people on average per day. The Queen Street facilities are classed as "good", while those at Brandraw are "average/poor".
Last week Aspatria Town Council agreed, as a result of the petition, that it would talk to Allerdale council again to look at the feasibility of taking over the toilets.
