People in Maryport are invited to join in a celebration of the town's Roman heritage this weekend, with a chance to be crowned emperor.

Ewanrigg Local Trust is holding a three-day free Roman festival from today with the North England Civic Trust, which owns Camp Farm.

It starts today with a drop-in session at the Ewanrigg and Netherton Community Centre from noon to 2pm.

Families can take part in a trail to find Roman coins and artefacts.

The trail can be done by individuals or groups and all ages are welcome.

The winner will be crowned emperor of Alauna, the name of the Roman settlement of Maryport.

Tomorrow, there will be a session in the community centre from 1pm to 4pm.

Families can make costumes and accessories for the Roman Games to be staged on Sunday at 1pm.

Events will include chariot racing and other competitions and entertainment.

The new High Sheriff of Cumbria, the Rev Richard Lee, will visit on Sunday.

The festival is a chance for people to have creative, messy fun and share their thoughts on the town's heritage with the civic trust.

Booking is not necessary and everyone is welcome, wherever in the town they live.
