Cumbrian Super League star Kyle Amor has made public his disappointment after Allerdale Council’s decision not to build a new stadium at Workington Reds’ Borough Park site.
The proposed stadium would have seen a ground-share between the Reds and rugby league outfit Workington Town. It was also due to host several Rugby League World Cup games in 2021.
Former Whitehaven star Amor, who started his amateur career with Hensingham, has played more than 150 times for his current club St Helens and took to social media to vent his anger.
He said on his Twitter account: “I believe this is a missed opportunity - not only for the 2021 World Cup, but [for] the area as a whole in terms of all sports that could use the facilities. I think the short-term costs would be far outweighed by the long-term benefits of such a community facility for the area.
“West Cumbria is in need of a modern stadium.
“The benefits for the youth are massive as well as also involving office space for Sellafield workers and NHS facilities.
“Finally, for me, I think in a time where change is necessary, this decision to reject such a plan will without doubt continue to hold back the area, not only in terms of sport, and the community, but west Cumbria’s identity too.
“If nothing changes, then nothing changes.”
Amor played in St Helen’s 21-10 victory at Warrington on Friday, a win that saw them open up an eight-point lead over the Wolves at the top of Super League.
