Allerdale was decked out in red, white and blue as people came together – but at a distance – to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday.

Young and old across the country sang, danced and raised a glass to heroes of the Second World War to thank veterans for their vital service on the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe.

In Seaton wreaths were placed at the new memorial seat and plenty of street decorations were put up throughout the village, including bunting and flags by Councillor Ken Slone and Kevin Moore.

There was also knitted/crocheted items which were prepared some time ago by Lynne Hardman’s group and a union jack flag was on display at the Parish Rooms. Billy Walker entertained with songs and veterans Alan O’Fee from Seaton and Martin Burdon of Workington attended.

Staff and customers were enjoying the VE Day celebrations at Morrisons, Workington. Lesley Jackson, community champion for the store, said staff and customers had been dancing, singing and having free afternoon teas. She said: “Everyone was in good spirits and enjoyed the day.”

In Cockermouth, mayor Julie Laidlow laid a wreath at the cenotaph.

Many families followed the Royal British Legion plans for the day and had stay-at -home street parties to commemorate the end of World War Two in Europe with family and neighbours.

Workington Royal British Legion also made a ‘stay safe’ video for the day, which was put on their Workington Royal British Legion Facebook page. The video showed members raising a glass for VE Day.
