ROAD closures were due to start in Cockermouth today while carriageway resurfacing work is carried out.
The works at South Street and Challoner Street were expected to take up to six days, subject to weather conditions.
A Highways spokesman said: "Phase 1 of the works will take four days to complete. The works will be on South Street from the junction of Station Street down to the River Cocker foot bridge.
"Phase 2 of the works will take two days to complete. The works will be on Challoner Street from the junction of Main Street to the junction at Croftside.
"The works will be carried out under a formal road closure."
Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times. Vehicular access will be maintained during non-working hours.
"We apologise for any disruption caused, although it will be our intention to keep this to a minimum," said the spokesman.
