ALLERDALE has joined in national tributes as the country mourns the loss of Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The 100-year-old died in Bedford Hospital on Tuesday after contracting coronavirus while being treated for pneumonia.

Allerdale Borough Council joined other councils and Government departments in flying the flags at Allerdale House at half-mast as a mark of respect to Captain Tom.

Tony Jackson the chairman of Workington's branch of the Royal British Legion, said the world was a poorer place without him.

"It's very very sad news," Tony said. "He's become a bit of an icon, not only for veterans but for the general public.

"From my point of view, one of the amazing things about Tom Moore was he transcended all ages. Young kids idolised him and were inspired by him right through to adults. The impact he has made over the UK and the world is staggering."

In April last year, young music star Logan Murphy - a.k.a the Beatles Boy - expressed his admiration for Captain Tom by performing his own twist on David Bowie’s Space Oddity on Facebook Live, and Logan's dad Lee said it had inspired his son to perform more.

He said: "Logan was really inspired by him. At the time he'd only just started doing his live shows. Doing that song for Captain Tom really pushed him to do it. It really brought him out of his shell."
