A HIGH-FLYING Cumbrian youth rugby league team have won the treble.
Hensingham Under 16s ended their season with an emphatic win over Seaton Rangers U16s in the West Cumbria Youth League Grand Final.
It was their third trophy this season having already won the League Winners Trophy and the North East and Cumbria RL U16s Cup.
On the night, a large crowd gathered at Egremont Rangers' Gillfoot Park to see Hensingham win 40-0.
Chris McKinney, Hensingham U16 assistant coach and youth chairman said: "It’s finished off a good season. We were supposed to play a couple of weeks back but it got delayed.
"The main thing is just getting back to a bit of normality and playing rugby. The icing on the cake is that they’ve done really well this year.
He said that it had been a long season, but that had been good for the players.
"It’s all exposure, the more rugby the better.
"The main thing for this bunch of lads is that they’ve been together since they were seven or eight-years-old.
"They’ve been together for a long time and it doesn’t happen overnight. As a youth team, we were never even in the top two or three until we were at under 11s. That’s been the main part of it."
With three Cumbrian teams in the Championship next season, the future is bright for rugby league in the area.
Mr McKinney wouldn't be surprised to see some of the Hensingham players pulling on the jersey for Whitehaven or Workington Town in the future.
He said: "If they carry on going on the pathway that they are, I don’t see why some of them can’t be playing at a high level."
Peter Gilmour, from Seaton Rangers, posted on Facebook: "Not our night tonight as the under 16s lost there grand final 40-0 to an outstanding Hensingham team.
"The lads give it there all but come up against an outstanding team who’ve now gone all season unbeaten.
"Really proud of all the lads for there efforts over the years as never once have they forfeited a game despite encountering some great teams over the years, and hopefully we will see several progress to the open age.
"Special mention to Ben Nixon, Stuart Ackerley and Wayne Walker for all the coaching they’ve done over the years, and to Ethan Frazer, Charlie Ackerley, Brandon Walker and Ellis Nixon who’ve played since day one of the team being formed.
"Congratulations to all at Hensingham on their win tonight and a fantastic season."
