IT WAS Christmas Jumper Day once again yesterday, and schools across the country threw themselves at the opportunity to get festive.

The children of Northside Primary School in Workington didn't disappoint in donning their brightest and most festive jumpers to get involved with Christmas Jumper Day 2021 on December 10 and raise money for Save the Children.

Executive Head Teacher for Cumbria Education Trust, Gemma Brierley, said it was "amazing" to see the children enjoying themselves on the day.

"It was absolutely amazing," she said.

"And to see all of [the children] sat in the hall with their Christmas jumpers on was great.

[They were] very excited to be able to take part in it and we have raised over £30, which we are thrilled about."

Pupils at Northside have been getting involved with other Christmas activities as well, like a Santa Dash - which included running a few laps around the school's playground in Santa costumes - and singing carols around a tree.

There was also a pantomime visit to the school, which saw the children enjoy a showing of Jack and the Bean Stalk.

Talk of cancelling nativities - something which has come to light more recently since the emergence of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus - was not an option at Northside, with the children performing a recorded Christmas play that their families can watch from the safety of their homes.

Ms Brierley added that Christmas events and activities are a "huge part of the year" for school children and it was important to inject some festivity and escapism into their school life amid the backdrop of a global pandemic.

Northside Primary School took to social media to share their delight in the day.

A spokesperson posted: "Wow, everyone looks absolutely amazing and festive in their Christmas jumpers and outfits today.

"Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to 'Save The Children' charity."
