IT’S time to raise the curtains for one theatre group in Workington as their new production is set to take place.
Directed by Jane Douglas, How to Spot an Alien is the next Theatre Royal Youth (TRY) production which will take place at the town’s Theatre Royal on Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29.
What do you do if you think your aunt is an alien? Twelve-year-old Jelly and her sister, Jonjo, have their suspicions. She won’t let them leave the house – or ask questions. And she won’t let them in the attic. She had strange rules, too – like 'No questions', and 'No thinking inside the house'.
Guests are invited to join Jelly and Jonjo on their quest to discover the truth in a rip-roaring adventure through space, full of friendship, fun and flying saucers.

Performed by talented Cumbrian actors aged 8 to 18, director Jane has shared how the group have managed to overcome a few obstacles whilst keeping up their enthusiasm in order to put on the play.
She said: “After over two years we have finally managed to put on this play. It has been difficult – to begin with we have an almost entirely new cast, many of whom have never acted before. Covid, other illnesses and holidays have interrupted rehearsals and the play requires lots of special effects and props.
“It is also only written for six people, so we have had to adapt it to ensure everyone gets a chance to speak. However, the young people have been lovely to work with and have really tried hard to learn their lines.
“We have worked a lot on speaking loudly and clearly, something actors of all ages sometimes struggle with so I hope you can hear everything tonight!
“Our technical/special effects team have made some spectacular props, costumes and effects – special thanks to James, Scott, Sarah and Ellie and the rest of the stage crew.”
Sit back and enjoy the show and see if you can spot the alien. The show starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 9pm. For further information, visit the Theatre Royal’s website.
