A BID has been submitted to the borough council to construct a 5G mast in Maryport.
Allerdale Council has received an application for planning permission which, if approved, would see a telecommunications mast installed on Mealpot Road in Maryport.
The application has been prepared on behalf of Cornerstone, a mobile infrastructure service working with 'the UK’s leading mobile communications providers.'
By way of consultation, Cornerstone sent pre-application letters and drawings of the proposals to Allerdale councillors of Maryport North and the town council in March.
If plans are approved, the applicant will install one 20 metre monopole, supporting six antennas and two dishes.
It is also proposed that three cabinets are removed and replaced with upgrades.
In supporting statements, Cornerstone say that there are no educational establishments within 250 metres of the application site and therefore no schools/nurseries have been consulted.
Cornerstone said: “This proposed scheme is considered unlikely to have any material impact on the local area but significant connectivity improvements which is a material consideration in the judgment of the site’s suitability.
“The proposed site has been strategically placed within the context of the existing established base station to address any residential amenity issues as much as possible.”

They say that if planning approval is granted, coverage of 2G, 3G and 4G will be improved and residents of the area will receive 5G coverage on devices that are capable.
Cornerstone added that they have chosen the least visually intrusive site available to site the mast.
New 5G masts are cropping up across the county as part of a scheme to improve connectivity.
Cumbria in particular has been identified as an area in need of better mobile connectivity.
