LABOUR have dominated the Cumberland Council elections - sweeping the boards with seats in the Allerdale area.

The Labour Party won 11 of the 16 seats on the new shadow authority for Allerdale - with the Independents and Conservatives taking two seats each.

History was also made on the night as Jill Perry won in the Bothel and Wharrels ward - the first Green Party councillor to ever win a seat in Allerdale.

Speaking after her win, Jill paid tribute to Jeff Smith, who founded the Green Party in the area. She said: "He always said that the Allerdale area and the Copeland area would be the last place in the country to have a Green Party councillor and I am so proud to prove him wrong, but I really wish that he hadn't died... and that he was here to see this today."

Labour councillor Markus Campbell Savours also won the Keswick seat on the Cumberland Council with a majority of over a thousand.

Newly elected St John's and Great Clifton councillor, Mark Fryer gave an address on behalf of the Labour Party after their landslide win, he said: "I know some of the candidates will be really dissapointed our commiserations to you, I know how you feel it's happened to me twice but you come back.

"This is a reset button for us really, I think the party has done really well across the county and by all indications we will be in control.

"No matter what you put on your election leaflets about whose best and whose worst, it's about looking after our people and I know all sides try to look after their people as best as they can."

Mr Fryer thanked council staff, as well as people who had helped him campaign and voters who elected him.

He said: "Let's look forward to a really strong Cumberland Council led by a Labour administration."
