The council, which has already planted 1,212 trees at Harris Park Extension to commemorate the historic event, has also organised a free concert, which will be held at the Kirkgate Centre at 7pm on Friday.

Entitled ‘Music Through Her Reign’, it will feature songs from throughout the last 70 years, performed by Cockermouth musicians and singers of all ages. Booking is recommended.

There will also be a free exhibition of royal artefacts and images down the ages in the Kirkgate Centre, from the Thursday to Sunday. It is organised by the heritage group, with refreshments available.

Heritage Group secretary Gloria Edwards said: “Our display touches on all royal events relating to our present Queen and other monarchs, including the Queen's Coronation. We are also tracking the many changes to Cockermouth since the Coronation in 1953.

“Queen Victoria's Golden and Diamond Jubilees (1887 and 1897) are also covered, with an illustrated talk on the many improvements that were made in the town, particularly as a result of the 1887 Jubilee - not least three new bridges, an extension to Fairfield Girls' School, and trees planted along Main Street, Station Street and in Market Place.”

The town's WI will be staging a display of the WI throughout the Queen’s reign from 10am to 3pm on Saturday at the United Reformed Church. There will also be stalls and refreshments.

Cockermouth Scouts will light a beacon at around 7pm on Thursday night.

Leader Steve Hardy said: “We have kindly been given permission by the farmer to build and light a beacon on top of Slate Fell.

“It should be well lit by 9.45pm when other beacons around the UK will be lit and it can be seen from afar.”

Scouts and their families have been invited to attend the lighting.
