A listed Cockermouth building which housed a successful restaurant for more than 30 years will be converted into two homes - if plans are agreed.

The Quince and Medlar, on Castlegate, went on the market in summer 2020.

Colin and Louisa Le Voi had run it as a highly successful vegetarian restaurant since 1989.

The building was also a family home to them and their three children.

The restaurant and four-bedroom accommodation went on the market with Christie and Co for £480,000.

A buyer came forward last year but later withdrew from the purchase.

Mr and Mrs Le Voi have now applied to Allerdale Council for planning permission for "the change of use of the restaurant and division of residence to create two independent dwellings".

The application includes "re-build of single storey rear extension and other minor internal changes".

A design and access statement said: "The property and dwelling has been on the open market for more than one year.

"Late last year (2021) a potential buyer had an offer accepted and made a successful application to build a new extension and make minor internal changes.

"That buyer has now withdrawn from the purchase. No other offers or potential buyers exist despite continued advertisement of the business sale.

"As no reasonable prospect of a buyer exists the current owners are seeking to reinstate the original division of the combined buildings to create two independent dwellings as originally built."

The application states: "The design approach adopted seeks to make the least impact on the historic fabric and allow architectural improvements to be made were possible.

"The proposed works are kept to a minimum where they impact the historic fabric."

The town council recommended approval of the application.
