A GROUP of Workington residents held their own street party for the Platinum Jubilee- inspired by the togetherness they found celebrating VE day during the pandemic.

Around 45 residents from homes along Bank Road and Lower Guard Street gathered together to celebrate the jubilee, all contributing to the day with everything from home made pizzas to traditional english scones.

The event was held on Saturday, June 4 in the gardens of Our Lady and St Micheal's Church with residents thanking the priest for letting him hold the event in the grounds.

Organiser Sue Scoon Fryer said: "When it was VE Day, through lockdown, we put a little goody bag on each of our neighbours' steps inviting them to join us outside their own house, socially distanced, to mark this occasion.

"We were approached by some of the residents this year to do something to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

"We arranged with the priests to hold it in the grounds of Our Lady and St Michael's due to kids being there and it being safer.

"It was a really good event for the local community to pull together with the church and celebrate the jubilee weeked."
