WORKINGTON joined with thousands of other towns and cities across the country to light a beacon in honour of the Queens Platinum Jubilee.
Despite rain, crowds gathered at the Duffield Beacon in Vulcan Park on Thursday evening to watch it being lit, alongside of thousands of others all across the country.
The beacon was lit by Workington Mayor Denise Rollo, who said the responsibilty was an 'honour and a privilege' to light the beacon.
The lighting also had special significance for the town after a campaign to save the structure was launched last year, when it was feared the beacon would be replaced by a new monument.
Mayor of Workington, Cllr Denise Rollo said: "It was an honour and a privilege to light the beacon which was one of thousands across the country for her majesties remarkable 70 year reign.
"I thank all those that attended on such a wet evening but it just shows we are a nation who are proud of our traditions and thankful for the queens duty which will be recorded in history."
Workington MP Mark Jenkinson was also there for the lighting of the beacon, he said: "It was great to be there obviously just for the fact that it was a celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
"It had also an extra significance because earlier in the year there was a possibility to chop it down, so it was great to see it being lit and in use again."
A spokesman for Workington Town Council said: "Our Beacon lighting began our celebrations in style, joining Workington with the rest of the United Kingdom and the hundreds of Beacon Lightings across our country."
