New members have joined the Allerdale GDF Community Partnership to discuss the potential siting of an underground nuclear waste facility with residents.

Nuclear Waste Services is in the process of identifying a suitable site and willing community for a GDF - Geological Disposal Facility which will store higher activity radioactive waste underground.

A number of identified areas of consideration have been found in the UK including one in Allerdale which is comprised of thirteen electoral wards.

Community partnerships have formed in the Search Areas, with the participation of the local authority, to discuss the prospect of GDF with the public.

Allerdale GDF Community Partnership is a group of residents, organisations, the developer and representatives of Allerdale Borough Council tasked with discussing the technology and identifying whether the community would be a willing host.

And the group has this week gained members including business leaders and representatives of community groups.

Becky Wolstenholme has joined the group to represent Cumbria Youth Alliance, the lead organisation for the development and quality quality assurance of youth provision in the county.

Adrian Davis-Johnston, a West Cumbrian businessman, parish councillor and former district councillor has joined the fold.

20 year veteran of the civil engineering construction and consultancy sectors Phil Davies has also joined alongside John Coughlan, CEO of TSP Engineering based in Workington.

The Community Partnership’s Chair, Mary Bradley, said: “I’m delighted to announce the four new members who have been brought onto the Community Partnership following a very successful recruitment campaign back in April. Their collective experience and local knowledge will strengthen the Community Partnership and help us broaden our conversations with the community about whether or not Allerdale is the right place to host a GDF.”
