FORMER MP Dale Campbell-Savours and his wife Gudrun have recalled their memories of 'a great day' when the Queen visited Workington in 1980.

It was March 21, 1980 the Queen was originally due to visit the steelworks in the town to look at a new piece of machinery at the site.

However due to strikes at the centre, Her Majesty's visit was amended - to see her visit the Carnegie theatre in Workington and even take a walk down Murray Road in the middle of the town.

The steelworks engineers demonstrated their new machinery to the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, before they walked through the town and down Murray Road accompanied by the then-MP Dale Campbell-Savours and Mrs Campbell-Savours.

Some in the crowd, however, were said to be slightly dissapointed; in true Workington style some watchers noticed that Her Majesty had worn the same coat chosen for a visit in Carlisle on her last visit to the city.

Mrs Campbell-Savours said: "Everbody was so excited there is absolutely no doubt about that, it was a great day.

"Children were standing outside of schools waving flags as she passed."

The Queen was also taken for a special meal at the former Westlands Hotel, located next to Workington Golf Club, with the now Lord Campbell-Savours recounting that Her Majesty commented on the lamb that was served being 'magnificent'.

The team at the Westlands are understood to have cooked the three course meal in the weeks before, so as to make sure that it was perfect for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's visit.

Guests at the dinner dined on a Cumbrian lamb dish for the main course, followed by a desert of melon balls and ice cream.

Mrs Campbell-Savours said: "It was absolutely cooked to perfection, it was absolutely beautiful and it looked phonomenal."

The day was one of the two happy occasions Lord Campbell-Savours met the Queen.

The second time was in Seoul, South Korea, whilst the former MP of Workington was working in the country with a parliamentary committee and was asked to accompany Her Majesty while she met dignitaries.
