A NEW free weekly cafe is going to be launched in Cockermouth next week - aimed at people for whom English is a second language.
It is being run by King's Church, from The Hub, off Market Place. They want to help people connect within the community.
"It's aimed primarily at people for whom English is a second language, and gives an opportunity for them to learn conversational English," said Paul Mogford.
Two Ukrainian families are being hosted by members of the church.
"And we have another Ukrainian who has become part of our community," said Paul.
"We were aware of other English cafes being held elsewhere so got in touch with the county council to talk about what we could do.
"We will be offering tea, coffee, cakes and conversational English."
Paul worked with refugees in Teeside 15 years ago.
"It's about creating connectivity and works both ways. We don't want to end up with enclaves," he said.
"People have so much to share, about their culture, food and music. Connecting can be a wonderful rich experience."
The cafe will start on Wednesday, October 5, running from 11.30am to 1pm.
The county council already runs a weekly English class in The Hub on Wednesdays, the cafe will be held after this.
