A NEW cinema looks set to be coming to Workington - after plans were submitted for new signage at Dunmail Park Shopping Centre.
Plans have been submitted to Allerdale Borough Council for new signage in the place of the old Plaza Cinema signs at the shopping centre.
The plans have been submitted by Parkway Entertainment Company Ltd, who have venues in a number of different towns across the north west including Cleethorpes, Barnsley and Louth.
The shopping centre was home to the former Plaza Cinema company, which announced its closure in April 2021.
The Plaza cinema had been operating in Workington for 20 years before its closure.
In a statement at the time, the owners of the business, located in Dunmail Park shopping centre, pinned the closure on not being able to agree lease terms with the landlords.
Since the news about the possible new cinema has been announced, people have taken to social media to express what they think about the possibilty of the new cinema.
Deborah Wilkinson said: "I personally don't see the point in having two cinemas when we have nothing else in the town.
"What about a bowling alley, or some other fun activities for kids and families?"
Clare Stilwell also welcomed the news and hopes to make the most of the free car park. She said:"Got to admit I haven’t been to the cinema since the Plaza closed. It was so convenient for parking."
Others agreed with Clare, Kirsty Light said: "Nice to have free parking at the cinema."
Carole Caulfield said: "What a good idea, it’s so much easier parking there."
Moira Browes was excited to see a new cinema starting up in the town, she said: "I really welcome the return of the Dunmail cinema."
However Sheila Turnbull did not agree, she said: "The town isn’t big enough for two cinemas. Recipe for disaster."
Scottyman17, felt that people may not be able to afford to go to the new venue, he said: "Another cinema - really?!
"Who can even afford to visit the cinema anyway?"
