A SMALL, unimposing building that gave more than 90 years of pleasure finally gave up the ghost and toppled over on Sunday.
The old Netherton Band Room has been closed for many years. Local councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes remembers some of its importance in the town: "It was, for almost 90 years, used as a community resource.
"Dancing classes, bingo, community meetings, dances, wedding receptions were all held there and the back room had snooker tables in it for locals to use."
The building has been abandoned for many years and had become derelict since it closed.
On Sunday, what was left of the building crumbled to the ground.
Although Cumbria Fire and Rescue, Police, and Allerdale Health and Safety Officers attended the building on Monday there had been no real danger to anyone.
The rubble was searched as a precaution, however, and the rescue services were satisfied that there was nobody there and there were no injuries to anyone.
