MINDLESS vandals have destroyed a range of plaques sponsored by residents of Workington for charities in the area.
The Reflection Garden in Vulcan Park was created by Workington Town Council as an opportunity for the public to sponsor a charity rose bush in memory of a loved one.
The money donated for a chosen rose bush will be donated by Workington Town Council directly to the charity.
The plaques, which were placed in a new rose garden in Vulcan Park to mark out the sponsored roses, have been smashed up by vandals at some point over the weekend, the town council believes.
Some of the plaques were for roses sponsored for a number of charitable causes including the Armed Forces Charity, Macmillan Nurse and the Born Free Foundation.
Many in the town are now in shock that plaques marking such key causes have now been destroyed.
Cllr David Farrar, town councillor for St Michael's, has been left sickened by the cruel acts of vandalism. He said: "I am truly saddened by this latest episode of vandalism in Vulcan Park.
"The park belongs to all the people of Workington, both young and old.
"The estates team are working hard to make improvements to the playpark area, and also recently introduced the remembrance garden as a way for people to pay respect to beloved community groups and causes.

"It is sickening that a small part of the community has dishonoured both the sponsors, the garden and all of Workington.
"If anyone witnesses damage being carried out in the park, please contact Workington Town Council or the police."
Workington resident Nick Sloan sponsored a plaque for The Bereavement Charity in memory of his late wife, and has been left upset by the acts of vandalism.

He said: "It speaks volumes about some of the people who live among us that they'd do something like this, presumably for fun.
"I hope the police catch up with them. It was thoughtful of the council to offer this in the first place."
