The mayor of Cockermouth praised a fellow councillor, calling him a "fantastic ambassador for the town".
Cllr Andrew Semple was delighted to be part of Allerdale's recent last ever civic dinner, at which long-serving councillor Alan Smith was made a Freeman of the Borough.
Cllr Smith has represented All Saints Ward for the past 28 years. He has not only been leader, but also served on numerous committees and panels, and also as Mayor of Allerdale from 2000 to 2001.
The role of Freeman or Freewoman of the Borough of Allerdale is for someone who is a person of distinction and who has rendered eminent services to the borough.
Cllr Semple told a meeting of the town council on Wednesday evening: "It was very well-deserved."
