An award-winning Cockermouth group will be bringing together various agencies to provide support and information for people whose homes and businesses are at risk of flooding.

It is hoped it may become a regular event at which people can share their knowledge and work together to protect properties.

Cockermouth Emergency Response Group (CERG) - a hardworking group of community volunteers which was set up following the 2015 floods - is hosting a Householder Help Yourself Day.

People will be able to learn more about the group, sign up for flood alerts and find out how to protect and insure their homes and business against flooding.

They will also be able to hear about flood management work that's planned for the area.

There will be representatives from the Environment Agency, Cumberland Council, The Flood Hub, Natural England, United Utilities and Cumbria Local Resilience Forum.

Co-ordinator Jo Crozier said: "After October 2021 when there were a lot of near misses in Cockermouth residents were asking about flood resilience measure which they could take and would be cheaper in the cost of living crisis.

"We came up with the idea of a drop-in event where people could learn about their options and what is being done."

Natural England and United Utilities will be talking about their natural flood management, including their plans for Crummock Water.

There are plans to remove the weir structure at Crummock and the supporting infrastructure. According to UU, this could lower the water level in Crummock Water in the region of 1.35 metres. It will also widen the lake margin.

"I'm convinced the Crummock changes will reduce the flood risk in Cockermouth. The River Cocker should be less volatile," said Jo.

Everyone is invited to the drop-in event will be held at the Kirkgate Centre, from 1pm to 6pm on Tuesday, May 23.

"It's not just for Cockermouth residents, everyone is welcome. We hope it is well-attended and can become a regular event," said Jo.

The group was honoured last year with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK - the MBE for voluntary groups.

Two representatives were invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Jo and group treasurer Hayley Bishop, both founding members of CERG, attended on Tuesday.

The new King and Queen were there, as well as Prince William and Princess Catherine, Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh.

"They talked to lots of people," said Jo. "Everyone was very excited. It was a lovely day, very relaxed."
