A Cockermouth group showed its gratitude for a rescue team, by presenting members with a cheque for £1,200.

Maryport Rescue is an independent lifeboat, flood, swift water, search and rescue service. Its funds were recently boosted by Cockermouth Rotary Club.

Rotarian Andy Carter said: "It was an honour to visit the Maryport Independent Lifeboat and hear first-hand of the work they do on a daily basis, from fundraising to the support they offer out at sea, often putting themselves at risk for others.

"It is truly awe inspiring to see lifeboats around our coast taking on the restless waves which can never be beaten without extreme courage and skill.

"The crews of lifeboats are nothing less than true heroes."

The Rotarians raise funds throughout the year in a variety of ways, including at town events.

"Whilst we make this donation on behalf of Cockermouth Rotary it is only right to point out that this would not be possible with the fantastic support we get from the people of Cockermouth," said Andy.

"I know people still recall the fantastic assistance that Maryport lifeboat provided during the last two floods and also some years ago at Carlisle when sadly there were direct fatalities in that community."

Andy visited the base with fellow Rotarians. He told the team: "We hope you all stay safe and know of the great appreciation we all have for you all, and for your boundless courage."
