A GOOSE has died after being attacked by a dog over the weekend - with a wildlife partnership in the area warning events like these may lead to dog exclusion zones in the future.
Workington Nature Partnership issued the warning after a goose was attacked at Siddick Ponds, near Workington over the weekend, by an uncontrolled dog that was not on a lead.
The goose died, after it was taken to the vets and had to be euthanised due to the number and severity of the wounds.
A spokesman for Workington Nature Partnership said: "Every year we have to post about this during the breeding season. If your dog cannot be controlled around birds, have them on a lead or walk somewhere else.
"This goose was attacked by a dog on the small pond at Siddick Ponds (a Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest) over the weekend.
"Swans are nesting nearby alongside countless other birds and our wildlife is already under enough pressure without irresponsible dog owners.
"We’re all dog owners and lovers ourselves but it’s attacks like these and the constant fouling of our nature reserves which may lead to dog exclusion zones in the future."
