A DRIVER lost his temper and threatened to “ram” a police vehicle after he was told the car he was driving would be seized.
Jamie Wedgewood, 37, was driving a Vauxhall Corsa in Workington on April 23 when he was pulled over by police, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.
Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said the defendant got out of the vehicle and was “being difficult”. He refused to provide details of the vehicle and if he was insured to drive other vehicles.
After several attempts of asking and the defendant refusing to give the required details, he was informed that the car was going to be seized.
Wedgewood then got into the car and said he was going to drive away. He said he had a spare key and would ram the police vehicle out of the way.
He eventually moved his arm from the lock which was preventing the door from being opened. He was then arrested for police obstruction.
During interview, Wedgewood admitted saying he would ram the police vehicle but said he was “looking for a reaction” and had no intention of doing it.
He said he wanted to make their jobs difficult and did have insurance on the vehicle.
Wedgewood, of The Avenue, Broughton Moor, Maryport, pleaded guilty to obstruct or resisting a constable in execution of duty and threat to damage or destroy property.
Claire Kirkpatrick, defending, said: “We are here because he lost his temper. He was frustrated he couldn’t remember the registration of his own vehicle.
“He had given his details to a different officer a few days earlier and was annoyed he was being checked again.”
Ms Kirkpatrick said that police did seize the car – and it cost £760 to get it back.
“He didn’t have a spare set of keys. He said that because of his temper.”
Magistrates fined Wedgewood £80 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
