Cumbria has been named as one of the best road trip spots in the UK.

It’s no surprise as the county boasts several scenic drives, such as Hardknott Pass and the Keswick Loop.

As summer is fast approaching, it’s the perfect time for those looking to head out onto the open road to explore the county’s breathtaking landscapes.

Cumbria was listed eighth on a top ten list put together by Moneybarn, with North Yorkshire, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Lancashire, Dorset, Highlands, Hampshire, and Kent placing in front.

There are plenty of scenic routes to choose from in Cumbria.

  1. Hardknott Pass

A hill pass between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley, this is the most direct route from the central Lakes to West Cumbria, and shares the title of steepest road in England with Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire.

Expect some perilous bends and drops on this route though, it’s sure to put hair on any driver’s chest.

  1. Keswick via Bassenthwaite

This route starts at Keswick and takes you round the stunning lake, and offers views of ospreys on Bassenthwaite.

It’s not far away from the Lake District National Park either if you’re looking for more animal sightings.

  1. Kendal to Keswick

The route along the A591 stretches for 30 miles and takes in stunning scenery including views of Lakeland fells and the banks of Windermere.

  1. Kirkstone Pass

This is another hair-raising route and is the highest mountain pass in the Lakes.

Also known as ‘the struggle’, it is a good way to get to the Lakes while avoiding the busy A66, and connects Windermere to Ullswater.
