A CHARITY race to raise funds for ‘life saving services’ for premature babies took place in memory of a West Cumbrian baby last week.

Cockermouth couple Rebecca and Tom Howe brought their son Jack into the world in June 2020 at 24 weeks into pregnancy.

Jack fought bravely, with the couple so thankful to have had 5 days with him before he passed away.

The couple are now raising funds for lifesaving equipment to be placed at James Cook Hospital, Middlesborough to help families and their premature babies. The couple said that the memories they made during his time at Middlesbrough will last forever.

They said: “During our precious time together, we were able to cuddle him, hold his hand and see his responses to our touch and sounds.”

As part of a series of events throughout the year, the couple organised a 5k race at M-Sport on Wednesday, June 28 with over £4,000 raised at the event to support the fund.

Annette Brown from Cockermouth said: “Tonight I ran the M-Sport 5k Charity race. Honestly the whole event was amazing, so well organised and the atmosphere was fantastic, what a venue to host such a unique race”.

Organiser Rebecca Howe said: “When the event was a sell-out, we were hoping for something special, but it exceeded all expectations! It was fantastic to see so many people there to support our charity event.

“To have raised well over £4k on entries, with another £650 from the cake stall, is incredible and the generosity and kindness of everyone involved has meant so much to us and the charity.

“Every penny will be making a difference to buy lifesaving equipment to help premature babies and their families in memory of Jack.

“Thank you to everyone for taking part in the event, to M-Sport for donating the incredible venue, Timing Up North for donating their services and to our friends and family who helped on the day – we couldn’t have done this without you.”
