WORKINGTON Academy students once again have impressed their headteacher, Mr Bedford, who recognised and awarded their hard work.
All award winners have received a Headteacher’s Recognition Award Certificate and a Gold Star pin badge to wear on their academy blazer.
Amongst the winners were Year 7 students Dylan, Oliver, Mia and Alexia. All students were nominated for reaching the final of the Year 7 Science Spelling Bee. Ms Stephenson commented: “All students spelled their way to the final of the science spelling bee. The words were not easy, for example palaeontologist and haemoglobin. Dylan was the eventual winner, with Oliver and Mia finishing in joint second place and Alexia in third place.”
Year 7 student Noah and Year 8 student Iestyn also received Headteacher’s Recognition Awards from Mr Bedford recently.
Noah was nominated for outstanding work in English, nominated by Miss Savage, who commented: “Noah has gone above and beyond my expectations in his preparation for this week's presentation on the royal family. He had phoned another student to discuss his ideas at the weekend, did additional research to include facts and statistics and then re-drafted his work from yesterday to ensure it was perfect for today. All of this was completely unprompted by me and is evidence of Noah's driven and determined attitude towards his learning. He is a wonderful role-model for his peers.”
Iestyn was nominated for amazing resilience shown in Sports Day last week. Miss Savage commented: “While supporting my tutor group during Sports Day yesterday, I was taken aback at Iestyn's resilience and determination to do well for his team during the bench ball tournament. He was knocked down several times, he was overcome with emotion yet still gave it his all. An absolute inspiration to watch and a wonderful role-model for all in his year group.”
Year 9 students Lewis, Ella and Josh were also all winners. Lewis was nominated for outstanding progress in Drama, by Miss Houghton, who commented: “Lewis has made fantastic progress in Performing Arts this year. He has grown in confidence and his performance skills have improved as a result of this. In his most recent assessment, he performed with flair and fantastic vocal skills, conveying the character to the audience in a naturalistic way. Not only this, but Lewis also stepped in for a student who was absent, demonstrating the 3 R's and embodying the 'be the best you can be' motto on Be The Best You Can Be Week. Well done Lewis!”
Ella was nominated for outstanding work in English, by Miss Flanagan who commented: “For homework this term, Ella has had to create a presentation to explain our topic Powerful Voices. Ella chose to do her presentation on Mental Health and Hidden Disabilities to highlight the struggle that people who suffer with these conditions face daily and to encourage people to be more empathetic and kind to others. Alongside her presentation, she also created leaflets with important information and phone numbers, going above and beyond. Well done Ella, I'm so proud of you!”
Josh was nominated by Miss Denham for outstanding progress and achievement in Maths. Miss Denham commented: “Josh has shown a phenomenal mathematical ability since I started teaching him at the start of Year 7. Every single lesson, Josh has completed all of the work expected from him and more! He has always demonstrated the highest levels of enthusiasm and resilience with all extension work. He has also worked extremely hard on showing his full working and has learned to include the upmost detail in his answers. In his end of KS3 maths exams, Josh achieved sensational scores. Well done Josh!”
