A WOMAN from Wales whose father fell on England’s highest mountain whilst the family were on a hike in the Lakes has thanked mountain rescue teams for their ‘kindness and generosity’ in helping her family.
Maggs Hay, from Cardiff, was on holiday in the Lakes with her family including her 82-year-old father Jim Sutherland from Port Glasgow in Scotland, when he fell whilst trying to climb Scafell Pike with Maggs and her husband.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were called to Brown Tongue at Scafell Pike at 1.49pm on Tuesday, August 1.
The family of experienced climbers decided to turn around en route after they were overcome by weather conditions, which resulted in Jim going into shock whilst making their way down the mountain.
Explaining what happened, Mags said: “We were in the Lake District; we were quite close to Scafell Pike and so we decided to add it to our agenda of things to do.
“We didn’t make it to the top because the weather was bad and my dad was starting to struggle a bit, so we decided to turn around, we made the right decision.
“The weather just came in from nowhere it was meant to clear up, that path is very slippery and dangerous, it just took the strength out of my dad with the conditions.
“My dad has conquered hundreds of mountains, run ultra marathons, completed over 150 marathons and even made it to the top of places only a small percentage of people have placed their feet, including Mount Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp.
“But yesterday Scafell Pike could not be conquered and after a fourth fall, he could not go on.
"With shock setting in we reached out for help.”
Three passers-by stayed with the family helping them until the mountain rescue arrived, with the family being overwhelmed by the help they were shown.
Maggs said: “My dad went into shock, and we phoned emergency services and got the mountain rescue, I didn’t expect the amount of generosity and kindness that everyone gave.
“They were there in an hour and a half which is absolutely phenomenal, and I just thought there would be a small group come up to check us out and help us down, but they were just amazing looking after my dad and also me and my husband, checking we were okay.
“It was just a really scary experience but handled so well, they are just absolutely amazing guys.”
Jim was packaged in a casualty bag and blanket before being taken down the mountain and taken for a check up at hospital by his family.
Maggs said her father is now doing ‘much better’ after his fall.
