A MAJOR retail store which will opening in Workington Town Centre has revealed their opening will now be delayed until the Autumn.
The Times and Star exclusively revealed in January that TK Maxx would be coming to the town, with planning applications going in for alterations to the outside of the former Debenhams Store in Washington store, in September 2022.
A spokesman for the company has confirmed that the store will be opening in October, as they look forward to the store coming to town.
Previously, the company had indicated that the store would be opening in Summer but have said that work is going on ‘around the clock’ to allow the store to open.
A TK Maxx spokesperson said: “We’ve been working round the clock to secure a fabulous new location in the heart of Workington as we know how much our customers value a great deal and love to hunt for shopping treasure in our stores.
“We can’t say much more yet, but Workington’s treasure seekers on the lookout for quality fashion and homeware at incredible prices can follow us @tkmaxxuk for more info, and shop from the comfort of their sofa at tkmaxx.com.”
TK Maxx has signed a new 15-year lease for the ground and part first floors of the former Debenhams store in west Cumbria’s leading retail destination.
Work to convert the space to meet TK Maxx’s requirements began in January with the company previously saying this will also enable the remaining areas of the three-storey building to be used for leisure, civic or other retail uses.
The building has stood empty since Debenhams closed its doors in May 2020, when the department store chain was plunged into administration nationally.
