A Cockermouth man is launching his annual Christmas book and toy appeal next week, hoping to bring smiles to the faces of hundreds of children in need.

Chris Bower first came up with the idea 10 years ago, to help spread some festive cheer throughout north Cumbria.

He appealed to people to donate new items and was delighted with the response.

"People are invited to purchase an extra book or toy from participating shops and put them into the collecting box," said Chris.

"They will then be taken to local charities to give to local children who might be experiencing financial or emotional difficulties."

Last year saw the most donations - 840 books and toys were dropped off and given to hundreds of children.

Chris has set a 1,000 target this year.

"We hope for extra support this year to reach our goal," he said.

"A good start has already been made with generous donations from Hills Books, The Book Trust, a manufacturer’s agent via Toysntec Carlisle and a private donor."

Donations are welcome from November 6 to December 15.

The participating shops are: Cockermouth: The New Book Shop, The Toy Shop, Cockermouth Arts and Crafts.

Keswick: Bookends.

Carlisle: Bookends and Toysntech.

Penrith: The Hedgehog Bookshop.

Maryport: The Lake District Coastal Aquarium, South Quay, Maryport.

The charities benefitting are: North Lakes Food Bank; Salvation Army Food Bank, Penrith; Carlisle Food Bank; Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, Carlisle; Salvation Army Food Bank, Carlisle.
