THERE are events across the north and west of the county being organised to commemorate Remembrance Day this year.
The Civic Centre, Court Square, and the Citadels in Carlisle, as well as the Beacon in Whitehaven and Allerdale House in Workington, will all be lit red at night on the week leading up to Armistice Day (November 6 to 12).
The RBL has organised a series of events within the Cumberland Council area.
These include a ‘festival of remembrance’ at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle on November 10.
Tickets are free and are available from the tourist information centre in Carlisle – doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
On November 11, an informal service with a two-minute’s silence will happen outside the cenotaph at Carlisle at 11am.
The next day, at 10am, there will be a service at Carlisle Cathedral, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph at 11am.
On November 12 there will be a service in Rickerby Park at 2.30pm.
Remembrance events are also being organised by other towns.
In Aspatria, there will be a parade that leaves Brandraw car park at 2.30pm to congregate at St Mungo’s Memorial Gates where wreaths will be laid.
The parade continued to St Kentigern’s Church for a service starting at 3pm.
In Brampton, where the Moot Hall is already decorated with poppies, a parade will start at 10.30am at the car park by the Lady Olivia Centre at Brampton Park, going to St Mary Magdalene’s Church for a 10.45 service.
In Cleator Moor, a service will be held at St John’s Church at 2.40pm on November 11, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial on The Square and a brief service at the Methodist church.
In Egremont, on November 12, a parade will meet at 10.15am at the market hall, leaving at 10.45 to St Mary’s and St Michael’s church for a service, followed by a small service at Moor Row at 1pm.
On November 12 in Cockermouth there will be a service at the United Reform Church at 1pm and a wreath-laying ceremony at 2pm.
In Keswick there will be a short service at the cenotaph on Penrith Road, on November 11 at 11am.
On November 12, there will be a service at the Parish Church of St John at 10am, then a wreath-laying ceremony at the cenotaph at 11am.
In Flimby there will be a service on November 12 at St Nicholas Church at 10am.
There will be a parade and service in Maryport at the top of Fleming Square at 2.30pm on November 12, moving off at 2.45pm for a service at St Mary’s church.
In Millom, there will be a parade marching off from the Tin Chapel at 9.30am, moving to St Georges church for a 10am service on Remembrance Sunday.
In Whitehaven there will be a parade on November 12 starting at the Copeland Centre at 10.40am.
In Harrington, a parade assembles at the RBL at 9.30am, arriving at 9.50am for a service at St Mary’s church at 10am.
In Workington, the parade will assemble on Pow Street at 1.45am, and go to Vulcan Park for a service at the cenotaph. There will be no church service after the parade but everyone is invited back to the RBL for free pie, peas and gravy.
