A Cockermouth cook is is launching a sustainable eating initiative and plans to offer free, regular, small-group events at her home.

Two of them will take place later this month. Sharon Watson will be sharing simple, practical tips and techniques for wasting less food and money and eating more sustainably.

Sharon, who has a catering company SLO Food Suppers, is launching a sustainable eating initiative called Let's eat SLOW (seasonal, local, organic, waste-free).

"I'm offering community education/cooking events," said Sharon.

"The atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive with plenty of time for questions.

"Each event will also involve cooking and sharing a delicious simple, SLOW lunch."

Sharon will be holding events on on Saturday, November 18 and 25, from 10am to 1pm.

"I've offered some similar, ad hoc sessions in the past," she said.

"I've been encouraged to start this initiative and run them on a regular basis by the excellent feedback I've had and the fact that I now have the support of a group of wonderful volunteers, most of whom came to an earlier session and felt inspired to help out at future events."

Sharon is also planning to organise visits to local, organic food producers.

"People can meet them, ask questions and get a practical understanding of the advantages for animal welfare and biodiversity that come with sustainably produced food," she said.

"Most people now understand that there is an urgent need to reduce our carbon emissions to prevent climate chaos.

"The 'Let's eat SLOW' initiative aims to spread the message that sustainable eating can not only save you money but enable you to eat more healthy, tasty food, protect nature and save the planet."
