A Cockermouth man's annual Christmas book and toy appeal has got off to a strong start.
Chris Bower launched the Children’s Book and Toy Bank 10 years ago.
New books and toys donated at participating shops are taken to charities supporting local children experiencing emotional or financial difficulties who might otherwise have little at Christmas.
The appeal opened last week in various venues.
"The first week has been very encouraging," said Chris.
"Despite current financial hardship donations are as good as last year at this stage.
"However, the need is greater this year and a target of 1,000 new books and toys has been set."
Last year 840 items were collected so Chris hopes the target is possible.
The participating shops are: Cockermouth: The New Book Shop, The Toy Shop, Cockermouth Arts and Crafts; Keswick: Bookends; Carlisle: Bookends and Toysntech; Maryport: The Lake District Coastal Aquarium.
The charities benefitting are: North Lakes Food Bank; Salvation Army Food Bank, Penrith; Carlisle Food Bank; Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, Carlisle; Salvation Army Food Bank, Carlisle.
