The newly-formed environmental group Cockermouth CAN (Climate Action Now) have planted two small copses at Towers Lane with the support of the town council.
In all about 60 trees and shrubs - all donated by the Woodland Trust - were planted.
"Cockermouth CAN have helped us to plant a mix of fruiting trees and bushes including elder, dog-rose, hazel, crab apple and rowan", said South Lodge councillor Richard Watson.
"As they mature they will provide food and habitat for a range of birds, butterflies and pollinating insects.
"As well as doing our bit for nature we wanted to soften the edges of the field giving it a slightly 'wilder', more rural feel, whilst still retaining most of the area as mown grassland for informal recreation."
