A WOMAN in her 70s died following a two vehicle crash on the A66.
A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash on Friday.
Police are investigating the fatal two vehicle collision that occurred between Bridgefoot and Broughton at around 6:45pm.
The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Suzuki Jimny.
The driver of the Suzuki, a 73-year-old man, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries.
A passenger in the vehicle, a woman in her 70s, died from her injuries.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by driving. He has been released on police bail.
A female passenger, aged 17, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary. A 11-year-old girl was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with a head injury.
A fourth passenger was uninjured.
