HEALTH authorities have issued a plea to the public to reserve A&E services for life-threatening emergencies only.
A&E departments at Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital are currently under strain, with patients being advised to use Penrith or Keswick Urgent Treatment Centres for non-life-threatening treatment.
A spokesperson for the North Cumbria Integrated Care said: "A&E departments are currently very busy at the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital.
"A&E is for life-threatening emergencies only.
"If your condition is urgent but not life-threatening, please use and Urgent Treatment Centre in Penrith or Keswick.
"Not only could it help us save lives, but it could save you a long wait too.
"If you are not sure which service is right for you, then visit 111.nhs.uk for advice," they said.
