A PALESTINIAN flag has been removed from an iconic statue in Cockermouth, after it appeared in the town this morning.
The flag was placed on the town's Statue Of The Earl Of Mayo, which is a prominent feature on Main Street.
The flag was reported to Cockermouth Town Council this morning, after which the town council requested their contractors remove the flag.
A company who was taking scaffolding down in the town centre removed the flag, prior to the contractor arriving to do it.
An image of the flag was posted on social media, causing discussion on groups in the town.
In a statement on social media, Workington MP Mark Jenkinson labelled it 'an act of desecration'.
"I have asked councils and police to arrange swift removal," he wrote. "I would hope our Cockermouth councillors can act quickly."
The Mayo is a tribute to the Earl of Mayo, who was Viceroy and Governor-General of India.
Solidarity with Palestine within Cumbria is continuing. At least 20,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since it began bombing Gaza in the wake of Hamas's October 7 attacks, the BBC has reported.
