A BRAVE six-year-old Maryport beaver scout has received a prestigious award from the organisation after saving his grandmother from falling into a diabetic coma.
Wesley Todd, who is a beaver with the Second Maryport Scouts, has received the national award from the organisation after saving his grandmother Anne Todd from falling into a diabetic coma - by fetching her diabetic kit and putting chocolate on her lips to try and bring her back round.
The youngster was awarded the Chief Scout's Commendation for Meritorious Conduct in recognition of 'his quick thinking and actions which prevented his grandmother lapsing into a diabetic coma' with the organisation saying he 'remained calm and showed considerable maturity for his young age'.
Wesley had learned first aid training a few weeks prior to the incident, with the scout group leader at Maryport saying 'all at the scouts are very proud of him'.
Group lead volunteer at Second Maryport Scouts, Michael Robertson, said: "We thought it was marvellous when we got the report back saying he had done to help his grandmother in that situation.
"We were amazed and so pleased with what he had done that we put him forward to the national scout organisation to receive an award, they decided on the level of the award."
Wesley is only the second member of Second Maryport Scouts to receive the prestigious award, and he also received a personal letter from Chief Scout Bear Grylls.
Wesley's father, Anthony Todd said: "We are really proud of him, it's a rare thing to be presented with and especially at that age. He hadn't long turned six when he done what he done, we are just really, really proud of him.
"At that young age just knowing what to do, if he hadn't have done what he done my mam might not have been here."
The celebration was held on Sunday, January 28 in the Netherton Parish Rooms, Maryport with the High Sheriff attending to present Wesley with the award, as well as other Scouts who received a number of different awards.
High Sherriff of Cumbria, Samantha Scott said: "Part of my role as High Sherriff is the wonderful opportunity to visit charities and voluntary organisations throughout Cumbria and it's always a pleasure and inspiration to meet them and find out what wonderful things they are doing.
"I was delighted to present Wesley with the Chief Scouts Meritorious conduct award."
