A NEW development is set to take place at a Workington sporting venue to keep up with a rising demand and variety of usage at the club.
Workington Cricket Club has submitted a planning application to Cumberland council for a proposed extension to its existing clubhouse to provide additional changing rooms and a viewing platform.
The planning application was submitted for the extension of the Workington Cricket Club clubhouse at the Cloffocks on February 16, with the hopes of the ground becoming a 'true multi-sports facility'.
The club has said it is in the ‘very early’ stages of the project but has provided a statement to get some background information on the situation.
A spokesman from the Workington Cricket Club said: “The application, if approved, will provide additional changing facilities to ensure we can accommodate the expanding needs for all our local users of the facility, as a true multi sports facility, and in particular will improve the provision of dedicated female and accessible changing facilities.
“The project originally started as part of a bid to improve the facilities with funding from the NDA GDF partnership."
The club has a growing community, with a number of different sports clubs running from the site, on top of over 10 cricket teams.
The spokesman said: “The club already supports five adult cricket teams, including one all-female team, three junior cricket teams, as well as junior football through the winter, and the weekly Workington parkrunners, therefore the current facilities are not sufficient to meet the growing diversity of demands placed on the facility.”
The club has said it is currently looking for a number of sponsors/investors to support the construction phase of the project.
