THE finishing touches are being completed this week at Maryport’s new Boardwalk.

On Thursday and Friday, the large seating blocks will be bracketed into place and the woodwork which surrounds the structure given an additional coat of protective oil to ensure everything looks its best for the summer season.

In April, the raised planting beds will be filled with wildflower seeds which have been chosen to be bee friendly and thrive in their coastal environment.

The Boardwalk will close on Thursday and Friday to allow the contractors, Ulverston-based Cowran Estates Services Ltd, to carry out the work quickly. A diversion for pedestrians will be in place along Strand Street.

The Boardwalk was officially opened in February and provides an accessible route across the little beach known locally as La’al Harbour.

The Boardwalk is part of the transformation of Maryport’s public realm using money from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

There is set to be £12million of regeneration work across the town - its aim is to give easy access for all to the historic harbourside - soon to be home to a new outdoor event space - and to the promenade, which is getting a new café and beach shop.

Work is due to be completed on those projects this summer.
