A NEW events and bar space could be coming to Maryport harbour, with hopes of 'revitalising the community spirit of the town'.
Cumberland Council has submitted an application that 'seeks to re-use existing outdoor space at the harbour side to host events such as outdoor markets and local festivals' on land adjacent to Maryport harbour.
The proposals include a pop-up stage area, bar, outdoor seating, marquee space, market stall spaces, an internal bin storage area and re-landscaping of the area.
Documents supporting the application said: "The proposal aims to revitalise the communal spirit and cultural vibrancy of Maryport by providing a dynamic and versatile venue for a range of outdoor events.
"Situated close to the heart of Maryport, the proposal seeks to enhance the local community’s access to open air recreational activities, cultural events and social gatherings."
The council said that the layout is aimed at preserving the character of the site and creating an inviting atmosphere.
The positioning of the bar and stage is aimed at reducing impact on neighbouring properties, with additional landscaping to 'provide a buffer to existing boundaries'.
The design aims to accommodate a diverse range of events, including but not limited to music concerts, cultural festivals, food markets, and community gatherings.
The layout will be 'adaptable', the application said, so that it can be easily reconfigured to suit different event requirements. Pop-up power points at various locations across the site will help to facilitate this.
The space will be, the council say, a place which creates a 'unique opportunity' for people to celebrate and gather in the town, as well as recognising the heritage of the area.
A design and access statement said: "In conclusion, the proposed outdoor events space in Maryport represents a unique opportunity to celebrate and safeguard the town’s rich heritage for future generations.
"By embracing its history, engaging the community, and promoting sustainability, the project aspires to create a vibrant outdoor destination that celebrates the unique identity and spirit of Maryport.
"It represents an opportunity to enrich the cultural fabric of Maryport while providing a dynamic and inclusive gathering place for residents and visitors alike."
The application will now go through a consultation with Cumberland Council.
